How it Works

We work to ensure that you complete your coursework and successfully earn your diploma. The steps involved in a typical Penn Foster program are :
• The Enrollment Process
• Your Student ID Number
• Begin Your Studies
• Getting Help When You Need It
• Taking Examinations
• Graduation

STEP ONE - The Enrollment Process

First choose the career training program that you are interested in. The website contains program overviews, curriculum outlines, tuition schedules, and information on career services once you earn your diploma. We also provide forecasts of employment demand and salary ranges for each career choice.

Once you are ready to enroll in a program, all you have to do is complete the online student enrollment form. If not you can call our toll-free number to speak with an admissions counselor. You also have the option of asking for an information package by mail along with an enrollment form.

STEP TWO - Your Student ID Number

Once your enrollment form is processed, you will be allotted a Student ID Number. Those who enroll online or by phone will obtain the Student ID Number immediately. The Student ID Number is required to obtain online access to your initial study materials. For those who enroll by mail, the Student ID Number will be provided with the mailing label in the first set of books and learning materials.

STEP THREE - Your Student ID Number

All you have to do is log in through the relevant website to start studying. The Student ID Number is used to register as a new student. You will then be able to download your first study materials. Start lessons as early as possible to obtain your diploma all the sooner. Additional lessons will be sent directly to you.

STEP FOUR - Getting Help When You Need It

All our programs are constructed to enable independent study. However, any doubts can be clarified by using the toll-free instructional support hotline. Faculty and support staff will be ready to answer queries from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday. Apart from this you can also leave a message and your call will be answered the next business day. Students can also contact instructors by email or regular mail.

STEP FIVE - Taking Examinations

There is a scheduled exam at the end of each lesson. These exams can be completed online through the website. As soon as you clear an exam, you start the next lesson. New course material will be sent once you complete an exam, ensuring that you will always have new lessons to study with.

Your examinations and projects will be graded using the scale provided below :

Lesson Grade (%) Letter Equivalent Rating
90-100 A Excellent
80-89 B Good
70-79 C Average
65-69 D Passing
Below 65 F Failing

You require an overall program average of 65% or more to graduate and earn your career diploma

FINAL STEP – Graduation

Once you have passed all the exams, you will obtain your diploma from Penn Foster Career School (high school students receive their diploma from Penn Foster Career School). Depending on your choice of program, you can complete your training within a few months from today! Or, you can take up to two years to finish a program.*

Graduates of our school can also use Career Services. This includes assistance with online job searches (by career and region), help in preparation of cover letters, interview tips, and other help. Career Services also includes a free of charge Certified Professional Resume Writer who will help write your resume.

* Students enrolled in the High School Program may need up to three years.
